COVID-19 Pandemic: Is it God's Judgment?

Did God Kill My Son Noah?

COVID-19 Pandemic: Is it God's Judgment?

My son Noah was stillborn. He was eight months' pregnancy when his heartbeat was stopped. I was four days and nights in the hospital with my wife. Finally, the baby was delivered and we buried him. I could not look at his dead body. I had no courage to see him. I didn't know how to respond to that kind of situation except to thank God for the unknown reasons.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:17 NKJV

I thought that my son died in the womb because I wasn't living a holy life and God allowed such a thing to happen in my life so that I could return to Him and make my relationship right with Him. I accepted that this thing had happened because of my careless living in my spiritual walk with the Lord. I took it as a wake-up call from God. But was it certainly true? Did God literally allow it so that I could come back to Him and live life according to His will? Does God truly work like that?

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

James 1:13 NKJV

As I have been taught that God allows evil to happen in our lives so that we could better our lives so I believed God allowed my son to die. But now when I think about it that way I don't really get it. I cannot believe that anymore. If I say that God allowed it means He let my son die. It also means He was involved in my son's death. It also means that He didn't protect my son even He could have. It also means that God let my son die because I was not a dedicated Christian at that time. It may look like God punished me for my sinful life but He didn't.

It seems God punishes His children by allowing Satan to have his hand over us so that we could turn to Him through our sufferings. I don't think that's how God deals with His children. Do you allow evil to happen to your children to teach them a lesson? Do you make them suffer before they become good children? How do you treat your children when they make a lot of mistakes in life? Do you stop loving them?

We act like we are better than God when we say God allows evil to make us dedicated Christians. When you allow something it is like you are doing it yourself. Suppose you allow someone to steal from someone you become equal to him. It is as if you are stealing with that person because you allowed that person to steal even though you could have stopped it.

Punishment In The Covenants

COVID-19 Pandemic: Is it God's Judgment?

In the Old Covenant, the Israelites were punished according to their sins. We see God's judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah, destruction of the world through the flood during the time of Noah. But these all happened when the people didn't have a better covenant. They were not under grace because grace and truth were not given to them.

And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:16‭-‬17 NKJV

Jesus is the One who brought the New Covenant to us which is full of grace and truth. There was no grace and truth in the Old Covenant because the Son of God was not yet manifested as Jesus. He established the New Covenant with His own flesh and blood with better promises.

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Matthew 26:26‭-‬28 NKJV

He purchased the eternal redemption for us by going through the punishment that was due to us. He took upon Himself God's judgment as our substitute. God's wrath over sin was judged on the death of Jesus upon the cross. He cannot judge twice for the same sin. Nobody gets punished twice for the same crime in the Court of the Law. Likewise, people cannot be punished for the same sin which Jesus has already been through. It's a done deal. It's finished. That's what Jesus meant when He cried out, 'It's finished.' before He died.

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

John 19:30 NKJV

When we try to put new wine into old wineskin that's where we get into trouble and understand God in a completely different way, far from the truth. We mix the Old and New Covenants and try to know and understand God. In the Old Covenant God dealt with people according to that Covenant.

In the New Covenant, God deals with people according to the covenant He has established through His Son Jesus the Christ. When we think that COVID-19 pandemic is God's judgment upon the sin of the world then we are nullifying the New Covenant because according to Jesus the sin has been already judged in His own body on the cross of Calvary. God does not deal with people today the way He did during the Old Covenant. He deals through the New Covenant on the basis of redemptive work of Jesus' death and resurrection. That's why COVID-19 pandemic is not God's judgment upon mankind. It is the work of the devil, and Jesus was manifested on earth to destroy the works of the Devil that includes COVID-19 too.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

“For I am the Lord , I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.

Malachi 3:6 NKJV

If Jesus was here today in the body He could have surely healed the infected ones who would come to Him for healing. Isn't it? He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He hasn't changed and never will be.

God's Wrath Upon His Son

COVID-19 Pandemic: Is it God's Judgment?

God not only hates sin but also sinners. There is a misconception in the Christian circle about it. They say that God hates sin but loves sinners. This is simply nonsense. How come God would hate sin and love sinners simultaneously. It will be contradictory to His character. He treats the sin and the sinners in the same manner. He takes sin and the sinners seriously. There's no neutral ground. He hates sin and sinners alike. He doesn't have a soft corner for the sinners. Both sin and sinners is a serious matter to Him. And if it wasn't then He would have never bothered to come in the form of man and deal with His own shameful death.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

Isaiah 53:10 NKJV

When Jesus became sin for all the humanity God the Father forsook Him till the punishment for the sin was over.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Matthew 27:46 NKJV

Sin separated man from God in the Garden of Eden. Sin brought separation between God and man. This kind of separation is also called spiritual death where a person is cut off from the supply of God's life into his being. It is a situation where man is on his own without God as his source and cut off from His presence and life. This was the spiritual condition of a sinner before Jesus became the propitiation of the sin of the whole world. He didn't leave any man behind.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 NKJV

He took the place of every sinner ever born and brought righteousness to them. And because of His substitutionary death for everyone, nobody is a sinner in God's sight anymore. God looks at every individual through the redemptive work of Jesus so they are no more sinners but accepted in God's beloved as righteous ones.

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

II Corinthians 5:21 NKJV

The only difference is that they are not aware of it and until and unless the Gospel of Jesus is preached to them they will not know who they are really in Christ. That's why Jesus commanded His disciples to go into all the world to preach that they are no more sinners but now are the children of God. That they were to change the way they think about God and themselves and accept the gift of salvation in the name of Jesus.

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 4:12 NKJV

COVID-19 pandemic is not God's judgment. It is the work of the enemy. And our job is to destroy it. We must rise to our authority in Christ and bring the kingdom of God into this current situation. May God open our understanding to stand strong on behalf of Him as ambassadors for Christ.
