The Vocal Gift of the Holy Spirit - Part 3

Part - 3

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. -  1 Corinthians 14:1-5 (NKJV)

Three things must be kept in mind while flowing in these gifts.
1.         1. The agape love must be our motive to flow in the vocal gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are two kinds of love, one is agape the unconditional love which is from God and the other one is worldly selfish love. We must be directed by the love of God.
2.       2. We must desire these gifts. We must be zealous about it. Without a desire, we cannot achieve anything in life. Everything good or bad starts with a desire.
3.      3.  The purpose of these gifts is to bring us and help others to an intimate relationship with God. In order to have any relationship to grow strong and intimate, there must be always transparent and regular communication. Without communication, the relationship cannot be stable and eventually, it will fade away. It is impossible to have an intimate relationship with God without proper and constant communication. That is why the Holy Spirit helps us pray in tongues, interpret it and prophesy so that we may be in constant communication with God for ourselves and also for the church.

Speaking in tongues

It is a Holy Spirit inspired utterance or a language. It is a spiritual language. Its origin is the Holy Spirit Himself. It is given to every believer for their edification and to grow in intimacy with God. It is a personal secret prayer language that keeps a believer in constant communication with God.

It is a Holy Spirit inspired message to edify the church. It is a message through a yielded vessel to bring edification, exhortation, and comfort to the people.

Interpretation of Tongues

Interpretation of tongues is done in known languages by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. When we pray in tongues then we need to pray in our own language too so that we can know what we are praying about or for. It is to pray in tongues and in our known language in faith trusting the Holy Spirit that He is helping us to pray. We must believe that it is the Holy Spirit who gives us this special ability to communicate with our heavenly Father in an intimate way and also to hear Him speaking to and through us to others for their growth of a relationship with God.
